It gets even stranger, since apparently they still send out an invoice, for the item which they have in fact not even gotten into stock. Tricky tricky… Well, so I’m still waiting for my iPhone. Extra crap since this week I’m on 24-hr call at work, which I now have to manage with 2 phones, one crappy which only works for calls, and one which I use for my calendar and contacts…

As you may have read I have had problems with my phones recently. My old favourite (Nokia N95) has been a long trusted helper, but unfortunately it has started acting weird, and therefore has to be retired soon. I replaced it with a Nokia E52, which absolutely didn’t work well for me, and now I have been uncertain about what to replace that with. Should I go for something which is small/light/simple, or something which is a bit bigger, but more competent? Since I now use my mobile more and more as a business-phone (e-mails, calendar, surfing) I decided it would be better to go for something less portable in favour of a good screen and good usability, and the choice ended up on a Apple iPhone 3GS.

I have seen the iPhone in use by friends and family, and I’ve seen first hand that it is indeed a quite competent phone. It’s actually much more of a portable computer with touch-screen, which is appealing, since my mobile habits are much more in that direction (being able to log in to the company portal, resetting servers etc, while sitting on a train or in the car etc.)

The order is placed now, and I’m eager for it to show up, so I can find out why so many others are iPhonoholics

So, I’m now back to my old N95 8GB. So far the downsides are the size (it’s bigger and a bit heavier), the location of the head-phone connector (on the side, which sucks if you are listening with wired headphones with the mobile in the jacket). The upsides are; Screen size (feels much bigger), built in speakers (stereo, and much clearer sound), mail synchronisation (suddenly I can use exchange and gmail in one and the same phone again), camera (big difference) and podcasts work again!

I keep the E52 for those weeks that I have 24-hr call, but otherwise I’ll be using the N95…

I updated my Nokia E52 firmware today. The update was very smooth and no data seems to have been lost. This is however one of the first good things I’ve discovered about this mobile.

I switched from my old N95 8GB because it was starting to mess up, dying and rebooting on it’s own, plus loosing contact with the SIM-card, which is something I can’t have when I’m on 24-hr duty, so I looked around, and decided to go for a Nokia E52, which was advertized as a no-nonsense, slim, long battery life, business mobile.

Slim is true, long battery life also, no-nonsense is absolutely nonsense, and business? well, apparently businesspeople don’t listen to podcasts, since that feature isn’t available. Business-men also don’t like to surf, since the mobile dies if a page contains more than ~2,5 MB of text/photos… Business? Well, apparently business-men shouldn’t have more than 1 e-mail account, since what happened to me when I hooked up both my exchange account and my gmail-account was that the memory flooded itself within a few days, which prompted me to make 3 factory resets until I gave up, and decided to only use the exchange-account.

This new update was made available just some days ago, and Nokia hasn’t said what they’ve fixed, so I’ll just take a wild chance and install it, and hope that some of the things they fixed are the things I’ve been having problems with. Meanwhile it’s very tempting to give my old N95 some love and care, and maybe get it going well enough to trust with making calls? If that could happen I would switch back in a second…

On a side-note; I don’t see my mobile as a replacement for a camera, but the camera in the N95 totally kicks *ss compared to the E52. The N95 is 5MP, auto-focus, quite good even in low-light, and sharp in daylight and macro, while the E52 only has one camera-setting, and thats; grainy, pixly, blurry
